Volleyball Takes Hornets To Five Sets

San Luis Obispo, Calif.-The San José State volleyball team took Sacramento State to five sets Friday night at the Cal Poly SharesSLO Tournament, but the Hornets won 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 25-15, 28-30, 15-3).

Tyanna Roy led the Spartans with 15 kills and added seven digs. Sarah Hibbs recorded a season-best 11 kills and had a team-best seven blocks, three solo and four assists. Yavianliz Rosado led San José State with a season-high 17 digs and three service aces. Allison Meehan had 31 assists, two aces and two block assists.

The Spartans started the match strong, winning the first set 25-23. The score was tied eight times, but San José State never relinquished the lead to the Hornets. Tied at 23-23, Hornet Hannah Meadows recorded a service error to give the Spartans a 24-23 lead, and Nandyala Gama put one of her nine kills on the night down to give San José State the first set.

Sacramento State won the next two sets, 25-18 and 25-15, and had a 22-18 lead in the fourth set before the Spartans rallied. San José State took a 24-22 lead on a combination of Roy kills, three Hornet errors and a Rosado service ace. During the set, the score was tied 16 times, and the lead changed 12 times. On the sixth set point between the two teams, Hibbs and Jamie Hirai combined to block Hornet Shannon Boyle and give SJSU the set at 30-28.

The Hornets led from the first serve of the final set to win 15-3.

Others contributing for the Spartans included Hirai with six kills, 11 digs and a block. Jessica Oneto had 10 digs, while Breann Robinson recorded 11 assists, three digs and a solo block. Kalie Matthews added five digs, two block assists and a dig.

"We are learning to be competitors," said Spartan head coach Jolene Shepardson. "We had good battles tonight in sets one and four. The time will come when we will know how to compete in every point and every set."

San José State continues play at the Cal Poly SharesSLO Tournament on Saturday with matches against Cal Poly at 12 p.m., and Bakersfield at 5 p.m. Both matches will have live stats, with links on www.sjsuspartans.com, while the Cal Poly match will be broadcast on BigWest.TV.
