LAST TIME OUT:
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - In its second overtime match of the weekend the San José State (2-3-2) women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw Sunday morning in a nonconference match at the University of San Francisco.
"All the condition work we did in preseason showed today and helped us," said first year coach Lauren Hanson, after her teams second consecutive overtime draw of the weekend.
San Francisco's (4-2-2) Mackenzie Krieser, while falling to the ground scored from inside the left box in the 40th minute to give the Dons the 1-0 lead slightly before halftime.
For the second consecutive match, the Spartans defensive held strong in the second half. Allowing fewer opportunities on goal, and keeping the opposition out of the net to get themselves a shot at keeping pace in the matches.
With regulation nearing a close, San José State junior Gabriella Stange erased the one goal deficit. The Fremont, Calif. native put home a shot in the top left corner for the equalizer in the 72nd minute.
Following the Stange equalizer, the Dons had the only shot in the regulation time. Allison Arriola attempted to beat Zoe Makrigiannis, but the goalkeeper came up with the crucial save to send the match to extra time.
USF outshot San José 5-0 in extra time, but the Spartans did an excellent job of bend but don't break leaving San Francisco with a 1-1 draw.
"Great team performance today. To travel on the road and go to overtime and then tie the game showed our true character and ability to believe. It was a good result for us on the road," said Hanson. Zoe came up with a couple of huge saves for our squad."
