San José, Calif. - San José State head track and field coach Jeff Petersmeyer has announced the addition of Jade Childs to the Spartans 2014-15 roster.
"Jade brings a lot of versatility to the program," said Petersmeyer. "She has the ability to score in multiple events and the potential to represent SJSU well in her specialty, the heptathlon."
Childs comes to San José State from Northern Arizona University, where she competed in the heptathlon for the Lumberjacks. Last season, Childs finished third in the Big Sky Outdoor Championships women's heptathlon with a career best 4,974 points. Childs also earned first-team All-Big Sky honors as part of the Lumberjacks 4x100-meter relay that ran the second-fastest time in NAU history.
The Boise, Idaho native won the 2012 Girls 5A State Championship in the 100-meter hurdles with an Idaho championship meet record-setting time of 14.15 while running for Mountain View High. Her time bettered the previous record set by Karla Childs, her mom, in 1992.
At the 2011 USATF Junior Olympics, she earned All-America honors placing eighth in the Young Women's heptathlon with 4,243 points.
San José State begins its indoor season at the University of Washington Invitational in Seattle, Wash., in late January.
