San José, Calif.-- Nandyala Gama led the Spartans in kills and Kalie Matthews in blocks, but the Spartans hit .000 in the Mountain West opener against New Mexico Thursday night at Spartan Gym. The Lobos swept San José State 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-12).

Gama had eight kills on 18 attempts. Sara Hibbs and Tyanna Roy each contributed six kills. Matthews led the team with a season-best six blocks, one solo and five assists.

Defensively, Jamie Hirai and Yavianliz Rosado each recorded six digs.

After falling 25-15 in the first set, the Spartans fell behind 12-3 in set two. Slowly, the team started chipping away at the Lobo lead and got as close as three points twice (20-17 and 22-19) before falling 25-19. New Mexico scored the first eight points of the final set and commanded the set, winning 25-12 and sweeping San José State 3-0.

San José State continues at home Saturday afternoon with a Mountain West match against Air Force at 1 p.m., inside Spartan Gym.
