Palm Desert, Calif.--Senior Megan Osland won her first collegiate tournament in convincing fashion, and the San José State women's golf team won by 24 strokes at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate this weekend at The Classic Club.
Osland, a native of Kelowna, British Columbia, won the individual title by seven shots on Sunday after shooting an even-par 72 in the final round. She ended the tournament at one-over, 217. Her previous best finish was 6th place at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic this past April in Maui. For the three rounds, Osland made nine birdies to lead the tournament, three in each round.
"Coming into this weekend, I wanted to play simple golf and put myself in position to make pars," said Osland. "My long game and irons were key this weekend. My irons gave me a lot of birdie opportunities and even a save on Sunday. On #16, I hit my tee shot in the water, and after the drop, I had 160 yards to the hole. I hit my shot to within three feet of the hole and made my putt for par.
"I have been working on all of my game but especially my mental game. I am feeling good about my game, and this win is the cherry on top. The wins this weekend are big confidence boosters for us. We know we can shoot good scores, and we went out and did that."
Two other Spartans finished in the top-five of the individual standings. Freshman Elizabeth Schultz finished tied for second in her first collegiate tournament. She shot an even-par 72 in the final round to finish the tournament at 224, seven shots behind Osland. Schultz finished the tournament with seven birdies over the three rounds.
My Leander tied for fourth, matching her best career finish of fourth at last year's Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational. Leander shot a 73 in the final round for a three-round total of 225.
Regan De Guzman finished tied for 24th at 234 after shooting a 77 in the final round. Kathleen Rojas matched her second round score with her second consecutive 75 and ended the tournament tied for 28th at 235.
The Spartans led from wire-to-wire in the team standings. The team shot the lowest team score of the day with a 292. The 24-shot win is one of the largest margins of victory in school history. San José State had not swept the team and individual titles since the 2008-09 season when the team did it three times.
"This win was an all-around team effort," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "We knew we were the best team in the field, and they were determined to prove that today. Everyone contributed to the win.
"Megan hit the ball very solid all weekend. To win by seven shots means she played really good golf. Dana (Dormann) and I could not be more thrilled for her to this win.
"I am also happy for Elizabeth and her second-place finish in her first collegiate tournament. She played very steady golf throughout the weekend."
San José State next plays at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational on October 7 and 8.
