Pacific Palisades, Calif. ----- In their first match of the 2014 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey pulled off a 7-5, 6-2 upset of Duke’s Ester Goldfield and Alyssa Smith. The Blue Devils’ tandem is the 18th-ranked pair in the country and was the tournament’s second overall seed.

“It was a great win today,” said head coach Sylvain Malroux. “They played well and they really complement each other. It’s exciting to see our Spartans performing like this.”

Klocker and Rey will resume action on Wednesday against Florida’s Josie Kuhlman and Peggie Porter. The San José State sophomores need a win over the Gators’ tandem and a subsequent victory over the winner of No. 58 Ashley Dai and Kate Vialle of North Carolina and Stefanie Tan and Seda Arantekin of TCU in order to advance to the main draw.

Main draw singles semifinalists, main draw doubles finalists and main draw consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
