San Jose--Eight San José State volleyball players and the coaching staff made their home debut Thursday evening at Spartan Gym. The team fell to visiting Saint Mary's 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-15).
In the first home match of 2014, the Spartans started four freshman - Sara Hibbs, Breann Robinson, Jessica Oneto and Jamie Hirai, one junior transfer, Kalie Matthews, and two returners, Tyanna Roy and Kiely Pieper.
Roy led the team in hitting with nine kills, while Hibbs and Robinson each hit .429 on the night (4-1-7 each). Hibbs recorded a team-best three block assists, while Robins had 17 assists, three digs and two block assists. Matthews had five kills, a dig and a block assist.
Hirai had six digs, an ace and a block assist in her debut, while Yavianliz Rosado made her first home appearance with a team-best 12 digs. Freshman Summer Avery had five kills, while junior Allison Meehan contributed six assists and a dig.
Spartan head coach Jolene Shepardson coached her first match in Spartan Gym after taking over the program earlier this year. She talks about the team's effort and the crowd at the match.
The Spartans play two matches this Saturday at UC Davis. The team plays Portland at 1 p.m., followed by UC Davis at 8 p.m.
