Volleyball Drops Two Matches At Aggie Invitational

Davis, Calif.-- Tyanna Roy and Sara Hibbs had season-bests in San José State's two matches on Saturday as the Spartans fell to Portland, 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-23) and UC Davis, 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-21) at the Aggie Invitational in Davis.

Against Portland, the Spartans won the first set 25-23, as the two teams traded the lead five times and had 12 tied scores. Tied at 23-23, consecutive attack errors by Pilot Emily Liger gave San José State the set win.

Portland won the next three sets, but the Spartans actually improved their hitting percentage in each set, hitting .344 in the final set (14-3-23). Liger led all hitters with 29 kills and hit .449 for the match (29-7-49).

Tyanna Roy led San José State with a season-best 16 kills, while Sara Hibbs hit .381 with 10 kills on 21 attempts and only two hitting errors. She also had a season-best seven block assists. Summer Avery recorded 12 kills, two digs and a solo block. Yavianliz Rosado led the team with 13 digs, while Jamie Hirai added seven digs and a team-high three aces.

In the nightcap, San José State hit just .065 for the match in the 3-0 loss to host UC Davis. Hibbs again led the team in blocks with six block assists, while Roy had a team-best eight kills. Rosado recorded double-digit digs for the third consecutive match with a team-high 16. Jessica Oneto matched her 10-dig effort against Portland with another 10 digs against UC Davis.

San José State plays at the Cal Poly Tournament next weekend, September 12 and 13, against Sacramento State, Cal Poly and Bakersfield.
