Oct. 10, 2014

Final Stats

LOGAN, Utah - A first half goal was just to much to overcome for the San Jose State (3-7-3, 0-4-1) women's soccer team as the Spartans fell to Utah State (7-4-2, 3-1-1) 1-0, Friday evening at Chuck & Gloria Bell Soccer Field.

Utah State broke the scoreless tie right before the half in the 42nd minute on a goal by Maris Hamblin as she put away a cross from Wesley Hamblin from about 15 yards out. The goal, which was nicely placed, was her first of the season.

The Spartans came back with a scoring opportunity in the 69th minute. Mireya Wathen-Mayorga found some space to fire off a shot by slicing through the Aggie defense, but Jeannie Woller saved the attempt at goal.

The Spartan defense, Zoe Makrigiannis, Gabriella Stange and Dorthe Hoppius, intensified in the second half limiting the Aggies shot attempts to just four compared to the seven given up in the first half.

SJSU outshot Utah State 5-4 in the second half, and bested the Aggies with two corner kicks, while Utah State recorded zero. The Spartans also did not allow a second half goal for the ninth time this season.

San Jose State is back in action on Sunday, October 12 as the Spartans travel to Boise State at 12:00 p.m. Live video will be provided by the Mountain West conference.

Game Notes: With one win in its remaining six matches, SJSU will eclipse the three victories recorded last season … After its tie to open Mountain West play, the Spartans have now dropped four straight … SJS U can snap its three-game road losing streak on Sunday with a win at Boise State.
