Women's Tennis Fares Well In First Day Of Northwest Regional

STANFORD, Calif. - The San José State women's tennis team kicked off the 2014 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships with a strong start, going a combined 6-3 on the first day of play at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Center. 

Senior Julianna Bacelar and freshman Malin Cubukcu teamed up for an 8-1 victory over Alexa K. McDonald and Ayaka Terakawa of Portland State to start the morning, while Gaelle Rey and Marie Klocker received a bye to the round of 32, which takes place Saturday. 

In singles action, Cubukcu continued her torrid start to her first season at San José State by downing her opponents from Santa Clara and Washington by scores of 6-3, 7-5 and 6-1, 6-2, respectively. The Straelen, Germany, native breezed through the white singles bracket of the Cal Nike Fall Invite and is now 6-0 in singles to begin her career.

Klocker blanked Seattle's Barbara A. Carey in straight sets to advance to the round of 64 before falling to Cal's Lynn Chi, the 8th-ranked player in the nation and the tournament's top seed. 

Bacelar picked up her first win of her senior campaign when she came from behind to beat Washington's Natalie Allen by a score of 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

Rey was forced to withdraw from her match due to an injury. 

On Saturday, Klocker and Rey will open up with their first doubles match of the weekend when they take on Sacramento State's Olivia Boija and Daria Savchecnko, while Bacelar and Cubukcu will play Catherine Leduc and Jamie N. Pawid of Saint Mary's. Both matches will be at 9 a.m.

In the championship singles bracket, Cubukcu will tangle with Danielle Flores of Saint Mary's, the tournament's 10th overall seed, at 10 a.m.

In the consolation bracket, Klocker will square off with Alyssa T. Tobita of Oregon at 1:30 p.m. and Bacelar will take on Fresno State's Aishwarya Agrawal at 2:30 p.m.
