Fairfax, Calif. --- The San José State men’s golf team was +23 as a team in the final round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational on Tuesday. The Spartans were +33 (284-294-307-885) in the 54-hole event and finished in 15th place out of 16 teams.
“This tournament really showed us what we need to learn,” said Spartans’ head coach John Kennaday. “We have guys who understand the changes that need to be made. We took some positives out of this tournament. From here, it’s about taking the lessons given to us and doing something with them.”
Cody Blick was the low man of the tournament for the Spartans at the 6,734-yard par 71 Meadow club. He finished in a tie for 11th place at -1 (71-67-74-212).
Taylor Bromley’s 77 (+6) on Tuesday dropped him into a tie for 60th place. He shot 72-74-77-223 (+10) for the tournament.
Felix Möesmang at +14 (77-73-77-227) finished in a tie for 72nd place alongside teammate Henrik Sohlberg who went 68-80-79-227.
Michael Grenz finished the event with back-to-back 80’s and ended up in 79th place at +24.
“I thought Taylor played tough, and Cody put in another really good tournament,” Kennaday said. “I also thought Henrik showed some flashes of brilliance. This is the third different lineup we’ve had this fall and I can really see it starting to take shape now.”
Host California came into the day trailing Arizona State by two strokes, and turned it around to capture a two-shot victory over the Sun Devils with a winning score of -13.
Arizona State’s Max Rottluff finished -9 for the tournament and took medalist honors by two shots over Oregon State’s Tyler Collier.
The Spartans will tee it up in their final tournament of the fall season on Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational on October 25-26.
