Gama & Roy Lead Spartan Hitters Against UNLV

San José, Calif.-- Nandyala Gama and Tyanna Roy each recorded double-digit kills as the San José State volleyball team was swept by UNLV, 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-23) Thursday night in a Mountain West match at Spartan Gym.

Gama led all hitters with 14 kills and added a block. Roy hit .310 for the match with 12 kills on 29 attempts and just three hitting errors. She also had two digs and block.

Starting setter Allison Meehan recorded 18 assists and three digs, while Breann Robinson came off the bench to record 10 assists and three digs.

UNLV hit .330 for the match, and three Rebels recorded nine kills - Ceannia Kincade, Bree Hammel and Daryn Glenn.

The Spartans had a lead in each set. In the second set, the team led 10-6 before UNLV scored five consecutive points to take an 11-10 lead that they held for the rest of the match.

San José State came out strong again in the third set, taking a quick 3-0 lead behind the serving of Kiely Pieper, whose ace made it 3-0. The Spartans battled with the Rebels until UNLV took the lead for good at 15-14.

Others contributing for the Spartans include Kalie Matthews who had four kills and two blocks; Yavianliz Rosado with seven digs and three assists; Pieper with six digs; McKenzie Palassou with five digs, an assist and an ace; Jamie Hirai with four digs and an assist; Jessica Oneto with two kills and two block assists; and Sara Hibbs with two kills, one block assist, one ace and one dig.

San José State continues at home this week with a match Saturday night against San Diego State. First serve is set for 6 p.m., in Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets. Tickets are available at the door for $5 for adults and $3 for youth and seniors.
