Stanford, Calif.--Freshman Elizabeth Schultz shot her first under-par round as a Spartan as the San José State women's golf team is tied for sixth at two-over 286 after the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Dr. Condoleeza Rice.
Schultz shot a two-under 69 on par 71, Stanford Golf Course and made four birdies on her round. She finished the day with birdies on two of her final three holes. Schultz is four shots behind leader Bronte Law who shot a six-under 65.
Regan De Guzman and My Leander each shot a one-over 72 and are tied for 28th. After starting her round with bogeys on two of her first eight holes, De Guzman was one-under over the next 10 holes with a birdie and nine pars. She finished the day tied for first in pars made with 15. Leander made three birdies during her round and finished her round with five pars and a birdie over the last six holes.
Megan Osland and Kathleen Rojas each shot a two-over 73 and are tied for 45th. Each made two birdies over their respective rounds. Osland finished the day with pars over her final four holes, while Rojas was one-under over her final six holes.
San José State is just seven shots away from leader UCLA, who shot a five-under 279. The Spartans are tied for sixth with Iowa State and Pepperdine. San José State was the second-best team on the par 4s and made the second-most pars of the round with 62. The team also made 12 birdies during the round.
"Elizabeth capitalized on her birdie opportunities today and managed her game very well," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "Collectively, we played the par-four holes exceptionally well. This is a great field, and we need to stay focused for all 54 holes."
Second round action begins Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. The Spartan begin their tee times off of the first hole at 9:15 a.m. The team plays with Kentucky and Southern California.
