SAN JOSE, Calif. - A trio of San Jose State women's soccer players found the back of the net for the first time in their careers as the Spartans routed Colorado State 3-0 Friday at Spartan Soccer Field.
Freshman Dorthe Hoppius and sophomores Carley McBeath and Camila Villarino finished second-half scoring plays for San Jose State in the Mountain West contest.
"It's nice for people to be rewarded for their hard work, said head coach Lauren Hanson. "I think Carley, Dorthe and Camila have all been working hard throughout the entire season and to finally get one is good for them."
San Jose State (5-7-3, 2-4-1) was on the offensive early in the first half of the matchup. SJSU nearly got on the board first when Lupita Estrada snuck behind the Colorado State (5-10-0, 2-5-0) backline. Estrada beat the CSU goalkeeper Jesse McGinley in a run down, but Estrada could not find an angle to get off a proper shot.
The Spartans outshout Colorado State, 12-4 in the first half, while each team had three corners.
After missing on opportunities in the first half, Hoppius engineered the scoring in the 58th minute. Kareli Rodriguez volleyed a ball over the Rams backline to a sprinting Hoppius. The Dorsten, Germany native then beat McGinley in a foot race to the ball, and slid in to give the Spartans a 1-0 advantage and her first career marker.
In the 78th minute the Spartans were on the attack again, as Stephanie Rebagliati floated a volley of her own to Villarino. Villarino then sliced through the Colorado State defense and found a sitting McBeath at the top of the box. McBeath one-timed the shot with her right foot, beating the Rams goalkeeper to the lower left corner to put SJSU 2-0.
Shortly after, senior Alex Jimenez found a crossing Villarino near the right post. Villarino shot to the same side from about three yards out into the lower right corner for her first career marker and the final goal of the match.
"I thought it was a great team performance," said Hanson. "I thought we kept possession of the ball, which is what we have been working on the past couple weeks, continuing to keep possession of the ball and moving off the ball. It showed today. Early on we didn't finish our chances, but the flood gates kind of opened in the second half to get a great win at home."
In what has become routine this season, goalkeeper Zoe Makrigiannis was a stud once again for the gold, white and blue. The junior recorded yet another clean sheet, her sixth of the season and second in as many matches. With her shutout, Makrigiannis joined former San Jose State goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald atop of the charts for the school single-season record in shutouts (6).
"Pleased with Zoe," said a happy Hanson. "For as much as I have said Zoe has done a great job in goal, she has been fantastic for us, a fantastic leader back there. I also think it was a great team effort to get a shutout. That's always number one goal. We put things together for 90 minutes today, and it was the right time with a tough match coming up on Sunday."
San Jose State will return to the pitch on Sunday, October 17, to host Wyoming in its final match of the weekend.
Game Notes: Makrigiannis has not allowed a goal in 227:51 for the Spartans ... San Jose State outshout Colorado State 21-6, the most shots for the Spartans in a match this season ... The three goals in the second half were a season-high for goals scored after intermission... The win marks the first back-to-back wins for the Spartans since defeating Sacramento State (2-1) and Louisiana Tech (2-1) in 2012.
