San Jose, Calif - The San Jose State women's soccer team outshot Wyoming, 21-13, but fell to the Cowgirls, 2-0, on Sunday in a Mountain West conference match.
"Our team was awesome," said head coach Lauren Hanson. "We played awesome. To dominate the second place team in our conference for 90 minutes, but it was unfortunate that we couldn't put one in the back of the net."
Wyoming got on the board first after a handball inside the 18-yard box was called against the Spartans. Kasey Curtis took the penalty kick for the Cowgirls. Spartan goalkeeper Zoe Makrigiannis was able to get a finger on the Curtis kick but could not slow down the speed of the shot as the Cowgirls went ahead 1-0 in the 2nd minute.
Wyoming outshot San Jose Stat, 6-4 in the first half of play, while the Spartans held the advantage in corner kicks, 2-1.
Trailing after the half, the Spartans upped the intensity on the offensive end. SJSU outshot Wyoming 17-7 in the second half and had a handful of opportunities go against them.
After a Wyoming foul in the 74th minute, Carley McBeath took a free kick from nearly 25 yards out. McBeath's attempt looked good, but the shot hit the bottom of the top post and bounced into the Wyoming goalkeeper's hands.
In the 80th minute, Lupita Estrada attempted to bend a shot from outside the right side of the box. Estrada's shot hit the right post and Alex Boehm jumped on the ball to give the Cowgirls possession.
One last opportunity for the Spartans came in the 86th minute. Alexis Venegas took a corner and served it into the box, and a scramble for the ball broke out. The Spartans had a pair of chances to get the ball in the net, but the official blew the play dead due to SJSU foul.
The Cowgirls put the game out of reach shortly after. Kaitlyn Lomsnes blew past the Spartan defense after an SJSU corner, and shot into an empty net for a goal, as they Spartans fell to Wyoming, 2-0.
"I'm thrilled with the way our team is performing right now, and we're peaking at the right time," said Hanson. "But that's soccer and sometimes you don't get the result you want, but I'm proud of the way our team played and we will continue to take things one game at a time and continue to get better."
San Jose State will return to the pitch on Friday, October 26, to host Colorado College in a Mountain West conference match. Match time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
