Colorado Springs, Colo.- Nandyala Gama and Sara Hibbs each recorded double-digit kills for the San José State volleyball team as the Spartans fell at Air Force, 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-13) Thursday night in a Mountain West match.
Gama led all hitters with 15 kills and added two digs in the match. Hibbs hit a team-best .321 with 14 kills on 28 attempts and just five errors. She also had a team-high four block assists.
The Spartans hit .205 in the first set to win 25-23. The two teams traded the lead seven times and had 11 tied scores during the set. San José State took the lead for good at 23-22 on a Falcon serving error and won the set on a Gama kill.
After falling 25-15 in the second set, San José State jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the second set. The teams traded the lead three times in the set as Air Force took the lead for good at 24-23 on a Spartan ball handling error and won 25-23. The Spartans fell 25-13 in the final set.
Other Spartans contributing included Yavianliz Rosado with 17 digs, McKenzie Palassou with seven digs and three aces, Tyanna Roy with 14 kills and Allison Meehan with 39 assists, five digs and two blocks.
"I am impressed at how well we came out in the first set," said Spartan head coach Jolene Shepardson. "I am also impressed at how Air Force responded and made adjustments. We need to be able to do the same."
San José State plays its final road match in October on Saturday as the Spartans travel to New Mexico. First serve is set for 2 p.m. MDT/1 p.m. PDT.
