MORAGA, Calif. - After a shuffling of the doubles teams pairings, two San José State University duos put together strong performances on the opening day of the 2014 Saint Mary's Invitational at the Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, Calif.
Two Spartan doubles teams, Gaelle Rey and Malin Cubukcu and Julianna Bacelar and Marie Klocker, won their first two matches to advance to Saturday's semifinals.
Rey and Cubukcu, playing in the red division, defeated Ana Loaiza and Olivia Boija of Sacramento State and Chelby Cooke and Nabilah Farah of Santa Clara by 8-1 and 8-2 margins, respectively.
Bacelar and Cubukcu, the top seed in the white division, downed their counterparts from Pacific and UC Davis by scores of 8-5 and 8-6. Friday marked the first time of the fall that Klocker and Rey had not been paired at the beginning of a tournament.
In singles action, Cubukcu, Klocker and Rey dropped their opening matches in the round of 32 and will compete in Saturday's consolation action.
In the white division, Abbie Pahz made the most of her Spartans debut by notching a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Santa Clara's Zeina El Tawil.
Saturday's match times are subject to change due to weather.
