El Paso, Texas --- Cody Blick's final round at the Price's Give `Em Five Invitational started and ended with tap-in birdies. He made eight other birdies throughout the round and at the end of the day it all added up to a school-record 10-under par 62 and co-medalist honors for the junior from Danville, Calif.
"There was just so much trust," Blick said. "I really trusted my golf swing, and I didn't think about anything except for the target. I never thought about the score, and just took everything one shot at a time. Just hit a good drive, hit a good approach, and then sink the putt."
Blick stepped up to his final hole, a 226-yard par 3, and hit a 5-wood to three feet where he would tap in to secure the win at -18. Antoine Rozner of Missouri-Kansas City shot 67 (-5) on Sunday to earn co-medalist honors alongside Blick. It is the third win of Blick's career, and this was the lowest 54-hole score of the three (67-69-62-198).
"That was quite a statement there," said San José State head coach John Kennaday. "He's not going to overpower a golf course, but Cody is a very deliberate player. When you shoot 62 it's not just the putter or the driver. You do everything well. That's what Cody did today."
As a team, the Spartans finished in seventh place out of 14 teams at -23 (287-275-279-841). #43-New Mexico State won the team championship by one stroke with a wining score of -46 on the 7,307-yard Butterfield Trail Golf Club.
Landon Polterock finished in a tie for 21st place at -6 (70-66-74-210). His 66 in the second round was a career low. Scott Munger shot his best round of the tournament on Sunday, a 2-under 70, and finished in a tie for 69th. Henrik Sohlberg shot 77-68-74-219 (+2) to finish in a tie for 57th, while Taylor Bromley at +6 (73-76-73-222), finished in 66th place. Brett Thawley played as an individual and shot 72-77-77-226 (+5) to finish 74th.
"I feel like we made a step forward in terms of how we play the game," Kennaday said of his team. "If you told me we would shoot 23-under after the beginning of this week I would have been pretty happy about that. Instead of waiting for things to happen, we went out and made it happen."
In the final tournament of the fall season, San José State made a 12-shot improvement between rounds one and two, and ended the event with the excitement of Blick's lights out final-round 62. The Spartans resume action for the spring season at the Amer Ari Invitational on February 5-7 in Waikoloa, Hawai'i.
