Women's Golf Ninth After First Round Of Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown

Oct. 26, 2014

Las Vegas, Calif.--Despite making 69 pars over 90 holes played, the San José State women's golf team made just five birdies and shot a 297 to finish ninth after the first round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas.

The Spartans led the tournament in pars made at 69 and were +1 on the par 3 scoring holes. However, the Spartans were +11 on the par 4 holes and +3 on the par 5 holes.

"Today was a frustrating day," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "We made the most pars of any team (69) but made only five birdies. We have to believe we are going to convert our birdie putts.

"We also need to do a better job on our par-5 management. We hit four great shots into hole 8 that was playing at 185 yards with a crosswind. We can make the easy look hard and hard look easy."

Regan De Guzman led the Spartan team with a one-over, 73, and is tied for 16th. She made two of the team's five birdies on the day.

Megan Osland is tied for 30th at 74, while Elizabeth Schultz and Kathleen Rojas are tied for 41st at 75. Schultz made 16 pars during her round including her last 11 holes of the day. My Leander rounded out the team's scoring with a 78, tying for 67th.

San Diego State leads the tournament after shooting a seven-under 281. UC Riverside is second at one-under, 287. Individually, Haleigh Krause from San Diego State leads the field after shooting a seven-under 65.

Second round action begins at 7:30 a.m., as the Spartans begin the day as one of the first teams to tee off of hole one. San José State will play with Washington State and Minnesota.
