San Jose, Calif.—Former Spartan gymnast Alise Blackwell joins the San José State University women’s gymnastics program as an assistant coach for the 2014-15 season.  She joins Shella Martinez, who has been promoted to associate head coach this season, on Spartan head coach Wayne Wright’s coaching staff.

Blackwell competed at San Jose State from 2006-09, primarily on vault, bars and beam, but did compete in the all-around her sophomore year.  She advanced to the 2007 NCAA West Regional as an individual competitor and placed 14th in the all-around.  Blackwell earned second team All-Western Athletic Conference honors on the bars her senior year.

Blackwell spent the past five years at Bay Aerials Gymnastics as a team director.

A 2010 graduate of San José State, Blackwell received a bachelor’s degree in health science.

“I am really pleased to have Alise join our coaching staff,” said Wright.  “As a former student-athlete here, she brings a new perspective to our program.”

Martinez begins her 11th season as a member of the coaching staff at San Jose State after spending the past 10 as an assistant coach. She coaches the beam, is the recruiting coordinator and handles all choreography for the Spartans.

“I am very happy to give Shella this promotion,” stated Wright.  “She has worked hard for this program and recruited quality student-athletes to San José State.”
