RENO, Nev. - The San Jose State women's soccer team four game unbeaten road streak came to an end dropping its first match of the weekend, 2-1 to Nevada Friday night at Mackey Field.
Daisha Jones-Oglesby scored the game-winning goal for Nevada (4-8-1, 1-2-0) in the 23rd minute from Angel Meriwether.
"We fought hard to come back in the second half, but couldn't put two in the back of the net," said head coach Lauren Hanson. "I love our team's fight and passion to right the wrong, but we need to be better in bringing this throughout an entire 90 minutes."
San Jose State (3-5-3, 0-2-1) had a chance at the equalizer in the 59th minute off a corner kick. Mireya Wathen-Mayorga placed a perfect ball into the box, and Gabriella Stange was able to get over a Wolf Pack defender for the header, but the attempt bounced right off the top crossbar.
In the 68th minute, Spartan goalkeeper Zoe Makrigiannis blocked Nevada's Bobby Reilly's shot attempt, but Meriwether was in the right place at the right time as she collected the rebound to put the Wolf Pack up 2-0.
Shortly after, following a Nevada foul, Carley McBeath launched a throw-in that bounced over the Nevada defense and into the foot of Lupita Estrada. Estrada tapped it in for the goal to cut the deficit in half, but the Spartans search for another fell short dropping its first match of the weekend, 2-1.
The Spartans 19 shots were the most for the season, while holding Nevada to eight shots. It was only the third time the Spartans have outshout their opponent.
San Jose State continues its run of four consecutive road games when it faces UNLV on Sunday, Oct. 5 in Las Vegas. Match time is slated for 10:30 a.m.
