Volleyball Defeats Fresno State In Four Sets

San José, Calif.--Nandyala Gama and Tyanna Roy led the Spartan offense Thursday night as the San José State volleyball team defeated Fresno State 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-20, 25-19) for the team's first Mountain West win of the season.

Gama led all hitters with 19 kills and hit .289 for the match with 45 attempts and just six errors. She also had two blocks and an assist. Roy recorded 18 kills on 42 attempts and added three digs, two solo blocks and a block assist.

Allison Meehan recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 38 assists and 12 digs. She also had three kills and a block in the win. Yavianliz Rosado recorded 23 digs, her sixth match with 20 or more digs. She also had seven assists and a service ace.

After recording just four service aces and allowing 11 to Nevada Tuesday night, the Spartan servers came strong in the match with nine service aces. McKenzie Palassou had three aces, while Sara Hibbs and Kiely Pieper each had two.

In the first set, the Spartans jumped out to a 10-4 lead and did not relinquish the lead. Fresno State did tie the set at 17-17, but San José State used a 4-0 run to open the set back up and won 25-19 on three consecutive Roy kills.

The second set found Fresno State with the lead for much of the set, the Spartans only leading 5-4, as the Bulldogs won 25-17.

After intermission, Fresno State jumped out to an early 9-6 lead in the third set, forcing Spartan head coach Jolene Shepardson to take a timeout. The Spartans responded by scoring the next seven points for a 13-9 lead and maintained the advantage for a 25-20 win.

San José State jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth set behind three Roy kills. The team never looked back, winning the final set on Gama's 19th kills of the night at 25-19 and recording the team's first conference match of the season.

San José State continues its homestand next week with two Mountain West matches. The team hosts Boise State on Thursday, November 6, and Utah State on Saturday, November 8. Both matches begin at 6 p.m., and are held at Spartan Gym inside Yoshihiro Uchida Hall, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
