Hibbs & Gama Lead Spartan Hitting At Fresno State

Fresno, Calif.-Sara Hibbs and Nandyala Gama led the Spartan in kills as the San José State volleyball team played three close sets with Fresno State but fell, 3-0 (28-26, 27-25, 30-28) at the Save Mart Center in Fresno.

Hibbs and Gama each recorded 14 kills in the loss. Hibbs recorded the team's best hitting night as she hit .385 with 14 kills on 26 attempts and just four errors. She also led the team with five block assists.

Yavianliz Rosado recorded 21 digs to lead the team, her fourth 20+ dig match and her second consecutive match with 20 or more digs. Allison Meehan had 37 assists, two aces and two blocks.

Other contributing included Tyanna Roy with nine kills and four blocks, Jessica Oneto with three blocks, and Kiely Pieper and McKenzie Palassou with seven digs each.

Fresno State jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the first set, but San José State slowly chipped away at the lead and tied the match at 15-15 on a block by Hibbs and Meehan. The Spartans then led by as many as four points at 20-16 before the Bulldogs rallied to tie the match at 22-22. The two teams traded the lead five times as Fresno State put back-to-back kills together to win 28-26. The Spartans hit .382 in the set with 17 kills on 34 attempts and just four hitting errors.

The second set again found Fresno State jumping out to an early 11-6 lead, and another San José State rally to tie the set at 23-23. The Bulldogs needed three set points to win the second set 27-25.

San José State jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the third set and led 18-13 before Fresno State scored five consecutive points to tie the match at 18-18. The two teams then battled for the rest of the set, and the Spartans had three set points but could not close out the set. The Bulldogs eventually won 30-28 and took the match 3-0.

The Spartans continue on the road next week with matches at Utah State Thursday night at 7 p.m. MDT, and at Boise State next Saturday, October 11, at 2 p.m. MDT.
