Sammamish, Wash.—After a four-hour fog delay, the San José State women’s golf team played the first round of Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational and finished the round with a 299, good for fourth in the team standings. Regan DeGuzman is the top Spartan finisher with a 73.

Because of the fog delay, the first day was cut from 36 holes to just 18 holes.  Kathleen Rojas had started for the Spartans and was two holes in before the golfers were called off the course because of the fog.  The teams then waited for the fog to lift, and play resumed at noon with a shotgun start for those teams who had not started.

De Guzman tied for 11th with her 73.  She made two birdies on her round and finished the day by making pars over her final six holes.

Elizabeth Schultz shot a two-over 74 for her round and tied for 17th.  She also made two birdies.

Megan Osland and My Leander each shot a 76 and tied for 30th, while Kathleen Rojas shot a 79 and tied for 48th.

“The team score is one of the best we have shot at Sahalee since I have been here,” said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  “It is not a bad score for this course, but we are disappointed and know we can do better.  Regan made some nice par saves early, and Elizabeth did pretty well for her first time at this course.

“Tomorrow we just need to go out and keep our composure.  This golf course can test you mentally and physically.   With this tournament now a 36-hole tournament, every hole is magnified, and mistakes are magnified.”

Host Washington leads the tournament with a three-under 285.  The Spartans are within five shots of Gonzaga (294) and three shots of Stanford (296).

Final round action begins at 8 a.m., with tee times every 10 minutes.  The Spartans begin at 8 a.m. off of the first tee.
