San Jose, Calif. --- The San José State men's basketball team jumped out to an 18-point lead in the first half, and never looked back in a 67-44 victory over Bethesda (CA) University in the 2014-15 season opener at The Event Center on Friday.

Rashad Muhammad and Jaleel Williams combined for 27 points in the first half while shooting 6-for-8 from three-point range.

"We wanted to take advantage of opportunities to hit shots early tonight," Williams said. "We were fired up to open the season here at home."

Darryl Gaynor II finished the game with eight points and nine assists, pacing the Spartans to 19 assists on 24 made shots in the contest.

"I always talk to our guys and tell them to just be efficient," said Spartans head coach Dave Wojcik. I thought Darryl was phenomenal with nine assists and one turnover. I haven't seen that in a while."

San José State extended its 38-23 halftime lead to 30 points in the second period. The Spartans' defense also clamped down on the Flames, allowing six points through the first 9:58 of the second half.

Danny Mahoney and Brandon Mitchell contributed with seven points each. Big men Matt Pollard and Ivo Basor finished the contest with four points each. Basor and Ryan Singer each hauled in eight rebounds to lead the Spartans.

"This feels good," Wojcik said. "But we have no time to relax with this as Portland comes in to play on Sunday. They handed it to us last year and that's something we talked about after this game. We'll enjoy this one for a few hours and move on to Portland."

San José State hosts the University of Portland on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in The Event Center.
