San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State women's basketball team enjoyed a record-setting performance in its 119-76 win over the Columbia Lions on Sunday afternoon in The Event Center.
The Spartans 119 points, 42 free throws and San José State and Columbia's 69 combined free throws set records in the Mountain West Conference.
San José State (1-1) set team records for points, free throws and free throw attempts (53). In addition, The Event Center records for points, combined points (195), free throws and free throw attempts fell. The marks for field goals (35) and field goal attempts (89) in the arena by the Spartans were equaled.
"Coming into this game we were still angry about the Utah game," head coach Jamie Craighead said. "We took some of that frustration on Columbia, especially in the second half."
Leading 55-42 entering the second half, the Spartans opened with a 21-4 run to push its lead to 30 with 13:55 to play. They enjoyed their largest lead of the game, 46 points, after an Emily Vann 3-pointer made it 115-69 with 1:44 to play and finished the final 20 minutes out scoring the Lions (0-2) by 30 points.
The Spartans forced 41 turnovers, while committing only 10 of their own, and had a 44-4 advantage in points off those miscues. In two games the team has forced 65 turnovers and made 35 steals.
San José State had five players in double figures and saw everyone get into the scoring column led by Jasmine Smith's 23 points. Rachol West hit a career-high 16, which was equaled by Rebecca Woodberry. Myzhanique Ladd, in her first collegiate start, chipped in 11 points and Ta'Rea Cunnigan added 10.
A major issue in both games this year has been rebounding. Against Columbia, the Spartans gave up 60 boards, including 21 on the offensive glass. Fifteen of those 21 came in the first half and contributed 22 second-chance points to the Columbia cause keeping them in the game before halftime.
San Jose State hits the road for its next four games, starting with a matchup at UC Riverside on Thursday, November 20. Tip off for that game is set for 2:00 p.m.
