San Jose, Calif. --- Four Spartans scored in double-digits and the San José State men's basketball team defeated Cal State East Bay 84-65 in an exhibition game at The Event Center Sunday afternoon.

"We aren't just settling for the three now," said San José State head coach Dave Wojcik. "We have a good inside presence, and that's a good thing. We shared the ball well and that led to open shots and good looks at the basket."

Jeleel Williams scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half, helping the Spartans get out to an early 10-point lead. Jalen James added 12 in the first half, which helped SJSU take a 51-34 lead into the locker room at halftime.

"I'm just trying to get my teammates involved and be aggressive on the offensive and defensive end," James said. James finished the game with 16 points, five rebounds, four assists with two turnovers.

San José State shot 54 percent in the first half and finished the game 10 of 20 from 3-point range. Rashad Muhammad led all scorers with 19 points on 6-for-10 shooting.

Two layups by Muhammad, and another by freshman center Leon Bahner led a 16-6 run to open the second half, which put the Spartans up, 67-40. Bahner also made his presence felt on defense, blocking two shots and altering several more.

"Leon affects the game so much," Muhammad said of his teammate. "He may have only blocked two shots but he changed so may other shots. That really helps us, and it helps us get into transition."

Freshman guard Darryl Gaynor II hit all 10 of his free throws and finished the game with 15 points. Isaac Thornton chipped in with eight points, seven rebounds and five assists.

"It felt great to go out and face another team," Muhammad said. "You get tired of going out and facing the same guys in practice. It was good to be out there with our buddies and our family playing against another team."

San José State will play another exhibition game on November 8 against Notre Dame De Namur before beginning regular season play on November 14 versus Bethesda.
