An all-Washington state honoree Diego De La Torre, and four-time JGANC tournament champion Kevin Velo, have signed a National Letter-of-Intent to compete for the San José State men’s golf team beginning in the 2015-16 season. Head coach John Kennaday made the announcement.

“These are a couple of great young men,” Kennaday said. “Both are very competitive, and will help balance out our roster.”

De La Torre, a Brush Prairie, Wash., native, was the 2013 Southwest 2A district individual champion. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association awarded him all-state honors for his victory. The two-time all-Greater St. Helens League choice led Hockinson High School to a 2A Washington State championship in 2013 as a junior. He also earned all-county and all-region honors during the team’s run to the championship. Most recently, De La Torre took medalist honors at the Washington-Oregon Border Junior open with rounds of 67 (-5) and 69 (-3).

Velo has had great success in a competitive slate of tournaments as a member of the Junior Golf Association of Northern California (JGANC). He is the two-time defending champion at the Skywest Junior Tournament, and also has wins at the Ernie Barbour Memorial and the Silver Creek Valley Junior Tournament. In 2013, he registered 11 top-10 finishes in 16 JGANC events. Velo will graduate from Monte Vista High School in his hometown of Danville, Calif., this spring.

“These are great additions to our Spartan family,” Kennaday said. “We couldn’t be more excited about our signees.”
