San José, Calif.--Tyanna Roy led the San José State volleyball team with 10 kills, but Wyoming hit .314 for the match and defeated the Spartans 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-21) in a Mountain West match Saturday night at Spartan Gym.
In the team's final home match of the 2014 season, the Spartans were without senior Kiely Pieper who was out with a concussion. The lone senior was honored prior to the match and cheered her teammates on from the bench.
Roy hit .276 for the match with six digs, while Nandyala Gama added eight kills and two blocks. Sara Hibbs hit .353 with seven kills. Setter Allison Meehan contributed 21 assists, eight digs and three block assists. Yavianliz Rosado had a team-best 12 digs.
San José State got out to an early 5-3 lead in the first set on a Roy kill. Wyoming took a 7-6 lead and never looked back for the 25-21 win. The second set found the teams trading the lead four times with the Spartans last lead at 8-7 on a Wyoming hitting error. The Cowgirls won the second set 25-15.
The Spartans jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the third set and led by as many as six (11-5 and 12-6) before the Cowgirls started to slowly chip away at the lead. Wyoming took the lead for good at 19-18 and won the set 25-21 to take the match 3-0.
San José State finishes the 2014 season this Tuesday, November 25, at Nevada. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m., at the Virginia Street Gym in Reno.
