Fullerton, Calif. --- Sluggish starts on the offensive end have been an issue for San José State men's basketball in the early goings this season. It hurt the Spartans again Thursday night in a 78-56 loss to Washington in the team's opening game of the Wooden Legacy Thursday night.It took San José State (1-4) 5:14 to hit its first basket, which allowed Washington (4-0) to open the game on an 8-0 run.It was only the beginning of what turned out to be the Huskies most productive half of basketball this season.A Rashad Muhammad three pointer got the Spartans on the board, but two more 10-0 Washington runs throughout the half put the Spartans in a 40-23 hole heading into the locker room."We have to come out of the gates better than that," said Spartans' head coach Dave Wojcik. "That's my main concern right now. "You can't get down early like that and then fight and scratch your way back into it."The Spartans were unable to close the gap in the second half. Robert Upshaw set Washington's single-game record with eight blocks, which forced San José State to shoot from the perimeter.The Spartans finished the contest shooting 30 percent (19-62) from the floor.Muhammad knocked down three three-pointers and led San José State with 15 points."We came out slow and that's something we have to figure out," Muhammad said. "I feel like I was shooting it well tonight, but I need to work on being more efficient. We all need to work on being more efficient and not letting the other team run out."Frank Rogers and Jordan Baker, SJSU's top two scorers, scored a combined for eight points on 2-of-13 shooting. Jaleel Williams finished with 11 points and four rebounds."We have to make some more shots," Muhammad added. "We have to try and attack more, and get to the line."Washington had four players finish in double-figures, led by Donaven Dorsey with 17 points.San José State turns around quickly to face Western Michigan tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. PT at Titan Gym. The Broncos suffered a 73-55 loss to Long Beach State in their opener of the Wooden Legacy earlier in the evening.
