San Jose, Calif. --- Darryl Gaynor II's nine points in the second half, and some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch, led the San José State men's basketball team to a 65-58 victory over Notre Dame De Namur in an exhibition game at The Event Center on Saturday.

Gaynor's layup with 7:48 left in the second half gave the Spartans the lead for good.

"I feel like we executed as a team and made some big stops on defense," Gaynor said. "I felt more comfortable out there with my teammates this game. I just felt better and I just tried to get after it with my teammates."

The freshman finished with 15 points and knocked down three three-pointers.

"I'm pleased with our guys' effort, especially our two freshman," said Spartans' head coach Dave Wojcik. "We'll look at the film and have a week to get ready for the opener. I thought our kids handled being in a close game very well. It came down to us making free throws, which we did, and I was very pleased with that."

Freshman center Leon Bahner finished the game 7-for-8 from the stripe, and collected 14 rebounds to go along with his nine points. The Spartans finished 22-of-28 from the line as a team and went 8-for-10 in th final two minutes

Jalen James scored 10 points and Rashad Muhammad added 12.

"I think last year we could have come out of that game with an L," Muhammad said. "We are playing as more of a unit this season. We are really locked in and confident in our team."

Don Washington led Notre Dame De Namur in scoring with 14 points. He also collected seven rebounds.

The San José State men's basketball team begins regular season action Friday, November 14 at 5:00 p.m. against Bethesda in The Event Center. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling the Spartan Ticket Office at 408-924-7589.
