Men's Basketball Falls To Seattle U, 54-38

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. --- The San José State men's basketball team fell to Seattle University, 54-38, in a non-conference contest Saturday night in The Event Center.

"I'm really proud of those eight guys tonight," said Spartans' head coach Dave Wojcik. "They did exactly what we asked them to do. They followed the game plan, and they played as hard as they could play. As a coach, I can live with that."

The shorthanded Spartans made two additions to the lineup before the game. Andrew Vollert and Tyler Winston, two letterwinners on the SJSU football team, not only suited up but played 30 and 21 minutes respectively.

Both players knocked down their first shots from the floor. Winston nailed a three that got the Redhawks' (4-5) lead down to two, 16-14, with 7:56 left in the first half. Vollert hit a jumper early in the second half for his only two points.

"It's been a great experience," Winston said. "It's not something everybody gets to experience. I'm exteremley appreciative of coach Wojcik and coach Caragher for letting me come out and play."

Darryl Gaynor II finished with a season-high 20 points to lead all scorers. He was 6-of-13 from beyond the arc.

San José State trailed 29-20 at halftime. Seattle University extended their lead to as many as 20 in the second period. Three Redhawks finished in double-figures with Isiah Umipig leading the way with 16.

"They started getting the ball down low to their big guys," Wojcik said. "They were just bigger and stronger than us and they made more shots than we did."

San José State played without Rashad Muhammad, Jordan Baker, Frank Rogers, Jaleel Williams and Matt Pollard who have been suspended indefinitely for violating a team rule. Vollert and Winston's status with the team will be handled on a game-by-game basis.

The Spartans have a full week off before traveling to Washington State on December 21.
