LIVE STATSSHORTHANDED SPARTANS ADD HELP
The Spartans made two additions to the lineup before the December 13 contest versus Seattle U. Andrew Vollert and Tyler Winston, two letterwinners on the SJSU football team, suited up and played 30 and 21 minutes respectively. Vollert will remain with the team on a game-by-game basis. Winston will not play again. The additions were made to help counter season-ending injuries to Jalen James and Leon Bahner as well as the indefinite suspension of: Rashad Muhammad, Jordan Baker, Frank Rogers, Jaleel Williams and Matt Pollard, for violating a team rule.
GAYNOR GOES FOR SEASON-HIGH AGAINST SEATTLE U
Freshman point guard Darryl Gaynor stepped up for a season-high 20 points against Seattle U on December 13. He made six three-point baskets, one away from the school's single-game record. It was the second start of the season for the Las Vegas, Nev., native.
FINDING THE FIVE
Head coach Dave Wojcik and the Spartans have gone with 10 different starting lineups this season through 11 games. Every player on the roster except Matt Pollard has been given at least one start.
MORE ON WASHINGTON STATE
The Cougars are out to a 4-6 start this season. They have wins over Idaho State, Rice, Missouri State, and UTSA. Davonté Lacy leads the team in scoring at 17.1 points per game. Lacy is tied for sixth on Washington State's career three-point baskets made list with 208. Klay Thompson (2009-11) owns the record with 242.
THE LAST MEETING WITH THE COUGARS
San José State fell on the road at Washington State 76-68 in the last meeting between the two teams. The Cougars control the all-time series 7-2 dating back to the first meeting on December 21, 1970.
SPARTANS FALL TO SEATTLE U, 54-38
San José State fell in their last competition 54-38 at the hands of Seattle U at home on December 13. Due to injuries and suspensions the Spartans were down to eight players. While a deliberate offense kept them in the game during the first half, 29-20 at the break, Seattle U ran away with the game in the second period for the win.
SPARTANS SNAP A LOSING STREAK WITH 74-63 WIN OVER SAINT KATHERINE
Rashad Muhammad scored a season-high 22 points, and Jaleel Williams and Frank Rogers each finished in double-figures to help SJSU end an eight-game losing streak Tuesday night against Saint Katherine.
BAKER AMONG MW'S TOP-THREE IN ASSISTS
Point Guard Jordan Baker's 4.1 assists per game mark is good for second among all individuals in the Mountain West this year. UNLV's Cody Doolin leads the conference at 5.7 assists per game.
MUHAMMAD INCREASES SHOOTING EFFICIENCY
Rashad Muhammad is shooting 47.6 percent (40-84) from the floor in his 10 games played in 2014-15. He ended last season shooting 36.4 percent in 31 games, and as last year's Mountain West leader in three-point baskets made, Muhammad shot 39.5 percent from beyond the arc.
SANTA CLARA EDGES SJSU, 61-50
San José State shot 57.9 percent in the first half, but the team's 20 turnovers were too many in a 61-50 loss to Santa Clara last Saturday night (12/6). Rashad Muhammadscored the first 13 points of the game for SJSU, which got out to it's best start of the 2014-15 season in the first half. Muhammad led the Spartans in scoring for the second game in a row.
JAMES NOT EXPECTED TO RETURN
Jalen James started 29 games last season and the first eight games of this season at point guard, but he is not expected to return this year after sustaining an ankle injury in the December 3 game at UC Davis. The sophomore was averaging 6.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game before the injury.
SINGER MAKES FIRST START OF THE SEASON
Freshman forward Ryan Singer made his first start of the season against Saint Katherine (12/9). He scored seven points in 16 minutes. Singer replaced 6-11 freshman center Leon Bahner who was diagnosed with a left ankle injury and is out indefinitely.
MW PLAY LOOMING
The matchup at Washington State will be the final non-conference game of the 2014-15 season. San José State opens up Mountain West play on December 31 at 7:00 p.m. MT at Utah State.
SPARTANS WIND UP 0-3 AT WOODEN LEGACY
San José State lost all three games at the Wooden Legacy last week, extending the team's losing streak to six games. The Spartans fell to tournament champion Washington (78-56), Western Michigan (79-60) and Princeton (69-54).
