Two all-purpose quarterbacks and a linebacker prospect are the first three to accept and sign a scholarship offer with the San Jose State University football program for the 2015 season. Ron Caragher, San Jose State's head coach, made the announcement.
Quarterbacks Kenny Potter of Long Beach City College and Seth Collins of Granite Hills High in El Cajon, Calif., and linebacker Frank Ginda of Pacheco High School in Los Banos, Calif., are projected to enroll at the University for the 2015 spring semester and join the football program for spring practice.
"I'm really excited about our three mid-year signees. These young men will benefit from coming in and having the opportunity to participate in our spring practice sessions," stated the San Jose State head coach at the start of the mid-year signing period.
In 17 games over the last two seasons at Long Beach City College, Potter completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 4,534 yards and 40 touchdowns with 18 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,027 yards averaging 4.8 yards per carry and scored 21 touchdowns. The 6-foot-3, 210 pound Potter was a two-time Central League all-conference selection earning second-team honors as a freshman and first-team recognition as a sophomore. He played his high school football at San Pedro (Calif.) High.
Collins was the leading rusher in the Grossmont League's Valley Division gaining 988 yards, averaging 8.7 yards per carry and scoring 17 touchdowns for Granite Hills in 2014. He completed 47.3 percent of his passes for 1,013 yards and 12 touchdowns with only five interceptions as a senior. (In mid-January, Collins announced he would be enrolling at Oregon State University.)
The two-sport athlete also competed as a sprinter for the Granite Hills track and field team. He placed 20th in the 400 meters and ran the anchor leg for Eagles' 4x400 relay team that was 11th at the 2014 California Interscholastic Federation State High School Championship meet.
"Seth Collins and Kenny Potter had outstanding careers at their schools - Seth at Granite Hills High School in San Diego and Kenny at both San Pedro HS and LBCC," stated Caragher about the two quarterbacks. "They both bring exceptional athletic ability and talent to the quarterback position."
Ginda was a two-time, first-team All-Western Athletic Conference linebacker for Pacheco High. He was credited with 115 tackles and eight tackles for loss his senior season. Ginda was in on 10 or more tackles in seven of the team's 11 games in 2014. A running back on offense, he became the school's first player to rush for at least 1,000 yards in a season when he gained 1,087 yards on 120 carries and scored 17 touchdowns during Pacheco High's 2013 season, only the third year of organized football at the school. During his career, Ginda averaged 8.8 yards per carry and scored 25 touchdowns.
"On the defensive side, Frank Ginda is an outstanding linebacker prospect that we were recruiting for quite some time. He was able to expedite his graduation so he could join us in January as well," the Spartans coach says about the 6-foot-1, 230-pound incoming freshman.
