San Jose, Calif. - Six Spartans scored in double figures as the San José State women's basketball team defeated the Southern Oregon Raiders 110-91 on Tuesday night in The Event Center.
Ta'Rea Cunnigan, 25 points, and Riana Byrd, 16 points, each scored season-bests for the Spartans. Myzhanique Ladd had 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Rachol West added 12 and Ali Bettencourt and Jasmine Smith chipped in with 10 points each.
Point guards Aniya Baker and Chereese Thomas dished out seven assists. Baker also led the team with four steals.
The Spartans (4-3) shot 50 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes and recorded the second highest point total for a half with 62, but didn't get their first lead until Paris Baird drained a 3-pointer to put them up 8-6 with 17:32 to go.
The teams then traded buckets for the next four minutes. With the Spartans up 21-19 and 13:20 to go before the half, they went on a 19-6 run. Emily Vann scored six of the first eight points in the spurt and it was capped by six straight from Cunnigan.
Once the lead reached double digits, inside 10 minutes to go before the half, San Jose State never let Southern Oregon get any closer. They led by as many as 26 points, 100-74, before taking the 19-point win.
The Spartans shot 45 percent from the floor for the second game in a row. They went to the line 35 times and converted 27, for 77 percent. It was the second best night from the line this year for the team.
Autumn Durand, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds, led the Raiders. Ashley Claussen scored 11 points and added 11 assists and three more Southern Oregon players also reached double digit scoring.
San José State travels to Boulder, Colo., for its next game, the third against a Pac-12 opponent in as many weeks. Tip off on Friday, December 5 at Colorado is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
