San Jose, Calif.— Julia Golbeck, from Sugar Grove, Ill., has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play sand volleyball for San José State University beginning with the 2016 season, as announced by head coach Aaron Shepardson.
Golbeck has played sand volleyball for the past four years and got her start in volleyball seven years ago. She competes for Team One Beach Volleyball Club in their Zen Warriors elite training group. Golbeck placed third at the 2014 Junior Beach Tours Nationals and finished fifth with her partner Danie Janacek at the 2014 JBT Central Open/Gold U18 Tournament. In 2013, she was third at the Central Open 1 in Milwaukee as part of the USAV Junior Beach Tour and earned a bid to the Invitational Division at the Junior Olympics. She placed second in the Team One Queen of the Beach Tournament in which she played with and against national champions.
A senior at Kaneland High School (Maple Park, Ill.), Golbeck plans to major in communications and public relations at San José State.
“I chose San José State because it has a great communications program to continue my studies,” said Golbeck. “All of the coaches and players are wonderful people, and I am so excited to join the Spartan family.”
“Julia is among the few elite players emerging from a fast growing beach volleyball community in Chicago,” said Shepardson. “Despite the cold climate, Julia has had the opportunity to train in the sand year round with her club, Team One, using their indoor beach volleyball facility. In the last year, she has really elevated her game, traveling with the club to compete among the nation’s best in California. Julia is a well-rounded player, terminal at the net and able to block and defend depending on the situation. She is passionate about the mental side of the game and approaches every situation with a positive mindset and lots of energy.”
