Juniors Jordan Baker of the men's basketball team, and women's swimmer Riley Spitser are the November Spartan Foundation student-athletes of the month, presented by ScholarShare.
Baker led SJSU in scoring at 11.5 points per game over six contests in November. The Phoenix, Ariz., native played his best game of the season on November 30 against Princeton with 23 points, six rebounds and four assists. After sitting out all of last season, he made a splash in his first game as a Spartan, scoring a team-high 17 points against Portland on November 16. The 6-foot-4 guard also led the team in assists for the month with 24 and steals with seven.
Spitser had a pair of first-place finishes in the 500 and 1650 freestyle and set three school records at the three-day, A3 Performance Invitational hosted by UC San Diego before Thanksgiving. The San Diego, Calif., native opened the meet breaking her own school record in the 500 free with a winning time of 4:46.10. The time was good for an NCAA B-standard qualifier and ranks second in the Mountain West and 25th nationally.
On the final night, she won the 1,650 freestyle by nearly 13 seconds touching first in a San José State record-setting mark of 16:34.72. Spitser was 14.15 seconds faster than her former school-record 16:48.87 time she posted at the 2014 Mountain West Championships. Her 1,000 split in the race of 9.59.68 also marked the first time a Spartan swam 1,000 yards faster than 10:00.00.
Helping the Spartans to a fifth-place team finish in the 13-team meet, she also scored points placing fourth in the 200 freestyle and swam San Jose State's opening legs of the 400 and 800 freestyle relays.
