Men's Basketball Wins, 74-63, Over Saint Katherine

Dec. 9, 2014

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. --- Jordan Baker's three-point play with under two minutes to go in the first half gave San José State the lead for good in a 74-63 win over Saint Katherine College on Tuesday night in The Event Center.

Rashad Muhammad led the way with a season-high 22 points, while Jaleel Williams and Frank Rogers also finished in double-figures to help the Spartans (2-8) snap an eight-game losing streak.

"I thought we played hard," said San José State head coach Dave Wojcik. "They're feeling good about themselves which they should. I don't care if it's one point or 31 points. A win is a win. Now we have to move on and focus our attention on a good Seattle team coming in on Saturday."

The Spartans extended their three-point lead to as many as 13 in the second half. Muhammad was aggressive scoring six of his 12 second-half points at the free throw line.

"I was just trying to be aggressive," Muhammad said. "I was just trying to attack, and help the scoring load."

Muhammad has led San José State in scoring in each of the last three games.

The Spartans dominated Saint Katherine (1-10) on the glass 52-29. Jordan Baker led the team with nine while Rogers and Ivo Basor each hauled in seven.

Rogers scored eight of his 11 in the second period, and Jaleel Williams was an efficient 4-of-5 from the field in the final 20 minutes.

"We got a sense of confidence," Williams said. "We got our spirits up a little. It doesn't matter who it's against, you just go out there and play hard, and it feels good to win."

Freshman forward Ryan Singer made his first start of the season in the place of Leon Bahner who was diagnosed with a left ankle injury and is out indefinitely. Singer scored seven points in 16 minutes and hit both of his shots from the floor.

"I'm really proud of Ivo (Basor) and Ryan (Singer)," Wojcik said. "Those guys gave us great energy. I'm happy for them because they've worked hard, and they got their opportunity tonight and made the best of it."

San José State will host Seattle University next on Saturday night in The Event Center for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
