San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State women's basketball team had a four-point lead with 45 seconds to play in regulation, but couldn't hold the lead. They were then outscored 14-10 in overtime and fell 72-68 to the UNLV Rebels on Saturday afternoon in The Event Center. The loss snaps the Spartans unbeaten home streak of six games.
Trailing 54-52 with 2:25 to play, Ta'Rea Cunnigan, who led the team with 24 points, took over. She scored six points on three straight possessions while pulling down two defensive rebounds and gave the Spartans a 58-54 lead inside a minute to play.
However, UNLV would not go away. They got a layup from Amie Callaway and then a jumper with 13 second to play from Danielle Miller to tie the game up 58-58.
Miller, who led all scorers with 30 points, opened the overtime converting a three-point play and a layup to give the Rebels (5-9, 2-2 MW) a lead they would not relinquish down the stretch. They converted 4-of-8 in the extra period and hit 6-of-9 free throws to earn the four-point victory.
The Spartans (8-6, 2-2 MW) struggled from the field in the first half shooting just 25 percent. At one point, they went 7:43 with out a bucket. Their 20-14 lead with 10:14 to go before halftime was a 27-20 deficit with 2:31 to go. The Spartans contributed to the UNLV advantage by committing nine turnovers in the run.
But before the half ended the Spartans made it a one-point game after back-to-back treys from first Rebecca Woodberry, who finished with 17 points, and then Rachol West who contributed 10 points off the bench. The Spartans trailed 29-28.
UNLV maintained its lead throughout the second half until the Spartans run at the end of regulation.
Riana Byrd had her first double-double of the year with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
San José State returns to action on Wednesday, January 14 at Fresno State. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
