San Jose, Calif.----- The San Jose State University women's water polo team opened its 2015 season with a pair of double-digit wins on the first day of the LouStrong Memorial Tournament.
The Spartans (2-0) defeated Sonoma State, 15-5, and Cal State East Bay, 17-4.
Junior Rae Lekness was San José State's top scorer on the day with nine scores - five in the Sonoma State victory and four in the Cal State East Bay triumph.
Senior Victoria Smith and sophomore Clara Espar Llaquet each reached the 100-career goal plateau in the Cal State East Bay victory. Smith matched Lekness for single-game high-scoring honors on the day with her personal-best five goals against Cal State-East Bay and seven for the day. Espar Llaquet extended her consecutive-match scoring streak to 35 over two seasons with one against Sonoma State and three in the Cal State East Bay match.
San Jose State starting goalkeeper Katelynn Thompson made 11 saves playing just the first half in each victory. Thompson was scored upon just once in each of the two Spartan wins. Freshman Tayler Peters was credited with 13 saves and allowed seven goals in her four quarters of action.
NCAA defending champion Stanford also won both its matches defeating teams from the People's Republic of China, the number-two ranked team in the world, 10-6, and Brazil, 13-6, in exhibition matches.
Other winners included Cal State East Bay (1-1), 12-2 over Fresno Pacific (0-2); Sonoma State (1-1) over Fresno Pacific, 8-6; and the People's Republic of China, an 8-6 winner over Brazil.
The three-day tournament continues on Saturday, January 17, with eight matches starting at 8:00 a.m. and concludes with six contests on Sunday, January 18, starting at 10:00 a.m. San Jose State's matches each day will be streamed on www.sjsuspartans.com/videos.
