Junior Rae Lekness scored seven goals in two games leading San Jose State University to a pair of victories on the second day of the LouStrong Memorial women's water polo tournament.
Lekness scored twice in a 15-3 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay and five times in a 13-9 triumph over Pacific for the Spartans (4-0). The junior from Calgary has 16 goals including two five-goal games in the Spartans' first four contests.
Sophomore Clara Espar Llaquet was the Spartans' leading scorer with four goals in the Cal State Monterey Bay win. San Jose State scored the first four goals of the match and led 8-2 at halftime. Espar Llaquet finished with five goals in the two wins.
San Jose State's win over Pacific was much more tightly contested. After the Tigers closed to 4-3 late in the second quarter, unanswered goals by Bianca Seyfert, Espar Llaquet and Tim Molnar gave the Spartans a 7-3 lead early in the third quarter. Pacific never got closer than three goals the rest of the way.
Katelynn Thompson had a busy day in goal for the Spartans in the Pacific win making 11 saves. The Spartans' starting goalkeeper needed to make just two saves in the first half of the Cal State Monterey Bay victory.
In the other six games on day two Stanford and Cal each opened their season with two lopsided wins each. Stanford (2-0) topped Pacific, 14-3, and shutout Cal State Monterey Bay, 20-0. Cal defeated UC Davis (0-1), 15-4, and dominated Fresno Pacific (0-3), 25-1. UC Davis edged Brazil, 7-6, in an exhibition contest, and the People's Republic of China beat Fresno Pacific, 17-1, in another exhibition match.
The LouStrong Memorial Tournament concludes with six matches on January 18 starting at 9:00 a.m. San José State will play exhibition matches against national teams from Brazil at 12:40 p.m., and the People's Republic of China at 4:40 p.m. Both Spartan contests will be streamed at www.sjsuspartans.com/videos.
