Jan. 21, 2015

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. - Senior guard Ta'Rea Cunnigan scored a game-high 25 points and in doing so passed Ricky Berry to become San José State basketball's career-scoring leader in the Spartans 88-78 win over Boise State on Wednesday night.

Cunnigan, who broke Karen Mason's 34-year old SJSU women's basketball record last Saturday, came into the night with 1,762 career points, six behind Berry.

After the Broncos got off to a 7-0 lead in the first minute, The Spartans (9-9, 3-4 MW) got it in gear. Cunnigan needed just over four minutes to score a pair of layups and then a 3-pointer to move past Berry. The trey shot capped a 14-2 run and gave San José State a 14-9 lead.

With 2:25 to play before intermission SJSU enjoyed a nine-point advantage, 43-34, on a pair of Nyre Harris free throws. However, Boise State (12-5, 4-2 MW) sliced the lead to two points with 29 seconds to play in the half. Aniya Baker responded for the Spartans with a 3-pointer and the teams went to the locker rooms with San José State leading 46-41.

The Spartans shot 50 percent (16-of-32) in the first 20 minutes; the first time in nine game they have shot better than 40 percent in an opening half. They finished the game at a season-best 48.4 percent from the floor including hitting 12-of-24 beyond the arc. The 12 threes and 50 percent shooting from distance are also season highs.

Cunnigan finished the half 5-of-7 from the floor, 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and hit a pair of free throws to lead the team with 14 points. Rebecca Woodberry had 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-4 from long range. Baker had five rebounds and five assists.

Boise State erased the Spartans lead with an 8-2 run to open the second half. The first of Riana Byrd's two free throws with 18:08 to play was the first of seven ties the teams would share down the stretch as neither could build a lead larger than four points.

Boise State had a 62-61 with 13:06 to play, but was held to just 2-of-14 from the floor for the remainder of the game.

Tied at 70-70 with 6:35 left, the Spartans closed with an 18-8 run in which they hit 6-of-8 from the field and 5-of-7 from the line.

Cunnigan was 9-of 14, 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, and her 25 points, tying a season high, gives her 1,787 for her career. Woodberry, who in the previous two games had missed her last 12 3-pointers, was 5-of-10 from distance, 8-of 14 overall for 23 points and grabbed a team-best six boards. Nyre Harris added 14 points and led the team with five steals.

Camille Redmon led Boise State with 13 rebounds and 16 points. Deanna Weaver, 19 points, and Brooke Pahukoa, 14 points, were the other Broncos in double figures.

San José State's next game is at Air Force on Wednesday, January 28. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m. in Colorado Springs, Colo.
