Herr Has Career-Day For Spartan Gymanstics

Berkeley, Calif.-Junior Maddie Herr had her best meet in her short Spartan career, tying for first on bars and finishing third on the beam and in the all-around. She helped lead the San José State women's gymnastics team to a 194.200 team score on Sunday and a third-place finish at the California Quadrangular meet with Arizona State, Denver and the Golden Bears.

Herr tied for first on bars with a season-best 9.825 and finished third on beam with another season-best of 9.800. She also recorded her best all-around score of the year with a 39.175 to finish third.

"I woke up feeling really great this morning," said Herr. "I just went out there and did what I do every day in practice. It all came together today."

The Spartans finished third at the quadrangular with a 194.200, as host California won with a 195.900. Denver finished second at 195.500, and Arizona State was fourth at 192.650.

San José State started the meet on beam and scored a 48.475. After Herr's 9.800, Cami Guyer scored a 9.725, followed by Amy Bellingham at 9.67, Kaitlin Won at 9.675, Kiley Field at 9.600 and Marissa Unpingco at 9.175.

The Spartans then rotated to floor and scored a 48.550. Guyer led the team with a 9.800, followed by Herr at 9.775, Mackenzie Douglas at 9.675, Field and Won at 9.650 and Alyssa Montalban at 8.950.

The third rotation was the best for the Spartans as the team scored a 48.675 on vault. Guyer again had a team-best 9.800, followed by Won and Herr at 9.775, Hannah Gilbert at 9.700, Alyssa Montalban at 9.625 and Rachel Heinl 9.450.

The Spartans finished the meet on the bars wit a 48.500. Herr's season-best 9.825 led the team, followed by Won at 9.750, Heinl at 9.725, Guyer at 9.675, Unpingco at 9.525 and Alyssa Kaschak at 9.500.

"I thought Maddie, Katie and Cami did a great job leading the team," said Spartan head coach Wayne Wright. "I was really happy with their performances. We jus tneed everyone to step up on meet day."

San José State returns to action next Sunday, February 1, with a meet at Texas Woman's in Denton, Texas. The Spartans will compete against Texas Woman's, Centenary and Towson beginning at 1 p.m. CST/11 a.m. PST.
