Spartans Set For Pair Of Local Showdowns

San José State’s women’s tennis team will take on a pair of local undefeated teams this weekend when it hosts the University of San Francisco on Saturday and visits Santa Clara on Sunday. 

The Spartans are coming off a 7-0 victory over Sacramento State in which the Spartans’ freshmen trio of Sybille Gauvain, Abbie Pahz and Malin Cubukcu all picked up their first-career singles wins. 

Julianna Bacelar, Gaelle Rey and Marie Klocker also notched their first singles victories of the spring last weekend, with Jessica Willett teaming with Bacelar for their first doubles victory as well. 

Saturday’s match marks the first of just six home matches for the Spartans this season. San José State will also take on Southern Utah (March 3), San Diego State (March 27), UNLV (April 3), Hawai’i (April 5) and Academy of Art (April 12) at Spartans Courts.

USF stands at 2-0 this season, having defeated Sacramento State and Cal Poly 5-2 and 4-0, respectively, last weekend. USF is led by Andrea Ka, the 49th-ranked singles player in the country, and Thyra Taune, who went a combined 4-0 last weekend and plays at the No. 2 singles spot. 

The Spartans dropped a 4-3 match in San Francisco last season.

The Broncos enter the weekend with a pair of 4-0 defeats of the Academy of Art and Sonoma State. Junior Chelby Cooke and sophomore Nabila Farah lead the Santa Clara with combined 3-0 records. 

San José State hosted then-No. 71 Santa Clara last season and fell, 4-3, at Spartan Courts.
