Laramie, Wyo. - The Wyoming Cowgirls were laying in wait for the San José State women's basketball on Saturday afternoon and used a dominant first 20 minutes to engineer a 96-60 win in Mountain West action.
The Spartans (7-6, 1-1 MW) surrendered 59 points to Wyoming in a first half in which the Cowgirls shot 57 percent , including 50 percent from beyond the arc. Kayla Woodward, Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year, had 13 by intermission on her way to 15 points and 11 rebound for the game.
Kaylie Rader came off the bench for Wyoming (6-6, 1-1, MW) and scored 20 points and grabbed 10 boards. Jordan Kelley had 15 points, 10 assists and was two rebounds from a triple double. In total, five Cowgirls finished the game in double figures.
The Spartans suffered their second straight game of poor first-half shooting; they hit 10-of-38 shots for 26 percent and trailed 59-24 at intermission. It is the third time in the last four games they scored 24 points or less in the opening 20 minutes and the fifth straight game in which San José State trailed at the half.
San José State actually led 7-6 through the first three and a half minutes and it was a four-point Wyoming lead, 17-13, at the 12-minute mark. But a 25-2 run over a six-minute span made a four-point game a 27-point game the rout was on.
Wyoming had everything going. For the game they shot 52 percent including 42 percent from distance. They controlled the boards 52-34 and with sharp interior passing doubled up the Spartans in points in the paint, 56-28. The Cowgirls went to the line 23 times, making 14, compared to San José State, which got to the charity stripe just six times converting four.
A few of the bright spots for the Spartans were that Ta'Rea Cunnigan, who led the team with 13 points, moved into fifth place on the program's career field goal list. She currently has 551 buckets, three behind Hulett Brooks for fourth place. Emily Schill, who saw her first action in almost 18 months in the team's last game, went 2-for-4 from the floor and grabbed a rebound in 10 minutes of work. In addition, Myzhanique Ladd had a personal-best four steals.
The 36-point defeat is the most lopsided loss for the Spartans since a 101-60 dismantling at Colorado State last season.
The Spartans next two games, both conference matchups, will be at home in the Event Center, where they have yet to lose this year. On Wednesday, January 7, Air Force is in town with tip off set for 7:00 p.m. Then on Saturday, the UNLV Rebels make their first appearance on Walt McPherson Court since the 2010-11 season. That game is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
