SPARTANS LOSE TO AIR FORCE AT HOME, 66-52
One week after losing by 50 points to Boise State, San José State was in position to win the game against Air Force deep into the second half. Some costly turnovers along with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch by Air Force kept the Spartans from getting their first MW win of the year.
MUHAMMAD APPROACHING SJSU TOP-10 FOR THREES
At 109 made three-point baskets, sophomore guard Rashad Muhammad is three shy of cracking SJSU's career top-10 list. Muhammad drained six threes in the last game against Air Force earlier this month. D.J. Brown (2012-14) currently sits 10th at 112, closely behind Ricky Berry (1986-88) at 113 and Terry Cannon (1990-92, 94) at 114. Tim Pierce (2007-09) is San José State's career-leader for made threes with 153.
MUHAMMAD FINDS DOUBLE-FIGURES
Sophomore guard Rashad Muhammad has finished in double-figures scoring in nine of his last 10 games played. He is averaging 15.1 points per game during that stretch.
MORE TIME FOR MITCHELL
Sophomore forward Brandon Mitchell has replaced center Ivo Basor in the starting lineup for the Spartans the last two games. Mitchell had provided an energy spike coming off of the bench before being inserted into the starting lineup. He's averaging five rebounds per game over the last five contests and has at least one steal in four consecutive games.
A YOUNG TEAM LOOKS TO ITS SENIOR
Senior forward Jaleel Williams has the most experience by far of anyone on the team with 79 career games played and 51 starts. He's coming off of perhaps his best game of the season with 16 points and seven boards against Air Force (1/28). He is averaging 12 points over the last five games and is 14-of-16 at the free throw line during that stretch. Williams has played 37 minutes per game in seven MW contests this season.
MORE ON NEW MEXICO
The Lobos (13-7, 5-3 MW) come into Saturday's game after a week off since their last game, a 63-62 loss in overtime at Wyoming. New Mexico has had an up-and-down conference season with wins over Colorado State, Utah State and UNLV paired with losses to San Diego State and a loss at home to Boise State. Deshawn Delaney leads the team in scoring at 12.4 points per game. Hugh Greenwood is another threat as he leads the team in threes and assists while averaging 35 minutes per game. Craig Neal is in his second season as the heads coach for New Mexico after spending six seasons as the associate head coach.
LAST TIME AGAINST NEW MEXICO
San José State suffered a 72-47 loss to New Mexico in The Pit last season on February 1 in the two teams' last meeting. The loss dropped the Spartans to 0-8 all-time versus New Mexico.
