Albuquerque, N.M. --- An array of defensive schemes thrown out by New Mexico held the San José State men's basketball team scoreless in the first five minutes, and after falling behind by as many as 19 in the first period, the Spartans fell to the Lobos, 67-41, in the Pit Saturday night.
"It's frustrating because we had open looks against their man and their zone," said Spartans' head coach Dave Wojcik. "Unfortunately we just didn't make our shots. You have to get off on the right foot against a team like that."
New Mexico's leading scorer Deshawn Delaney had 10 first-half points, and his two threes helped the Lobos take a 21-4 lead with 10:33 left in the first period.
The two teams battled through some chippy play in the second half, sending the referees to the replay monitor on two separate plays involving hard fouls. Through that, New Mexico extended its lead to as many as 27 points while shooting 57 percent in the second period.
Delaney led the Lobos with 15 points in the game and Sam Logwood added 10.
Rashad Muhammad scored 15 points to lead the Spartans and make it 10 of his last 11 games ending in double-figures. Jaleel Williams put in 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to notch San José State's first double-double performance of the season in front of a crowd of 14,358 at the Pit.
"All I want to do is be aggressive because I really want us to win," Williams said. "This is my last year, and I really want us to go out winning at least a couple games before it's all over for me. It's not an individual thing, it's about our team and I really want us to win."
The loss drops San José State to 2-19 overall and 0-9 in Mountain West play. New Mexico improved to 14-7, and 6-3 in the MW.
Next up, the Spartans will have their second meeting of the year with Fresno State on Wednesday, February 4, in Fresno, Calif.
