San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State women's basketball team had two chances in the final minute to tie or take the lead against the New Mexico Lobos, but couldn't convert either opportunity and lost 64-62 on Saturday afternoon in The Event Center.
Down 63-62 with 24 seconds to play, Riana Byrd was fouled and went to the line for a one-and-one. A 67 percent shooter from the free throw line, Byrd missed the front end of the opportunity. Lobo Bryce Owens was fouled by Ta'Rea Cunnigan on the ensuing possession and sank her first free throw to extend the New Mexico advantage to two points, 64-62.
Owens missed her second attempt and off a Byrd rebound moved the ball into the frontcourt where head coach Jamie Craighead called time out to set up a final shot with seven seconds left.
Rebecca Woodberry inbounded the ball to Aniya Baker at the top of the three-point arc. Cunnigan set a screen for Baker and rolled the hoop. Baker hesitated getting the ball to her, but a beat later found Cunnigan, who led all scorers with 23 points, at the elbow.
The defense collapsed on Cunnigan who was fouled on a jumper from 14 feet. With one second left on the clock Cunnigan had a chance to send it into overtime.
Her first attempt rolled off the rim. Craighead called time out to set up a play to get the rebound and hope for a tip in. Cunnigan purposely missed her attempt to the right side of the rim, but New Mexico got the rebound and the clock ran out on San José State.
The Spartans put themselves behind the eight ball early, going down 14-2 at the first media timeout. San José State missed their first four shots and hit just 16 percent in the first four minutes.
New Mexico had its largest lead of the game, 18-9, on a Khadijah Shumpert layup with 10:20 to go in the half.
Emily Vann hit a turnaround jumper with 5:10 to play before intermission to trim the Lobos lead to 24-20. The Spartans turned up the defensive intensity to close out the half forcing New Mexico into seven turnovers before finally tying the game on a Vann jumper with 42 seconds to go. Baker gave the team its first lead, 31-28, on a long three with six seconds to play and that was the score as the teams went to the locker rooms.
San José State continued to play at its pace to open the second half and quickly built a nine point advantage, 42-33 with 16:03 to play.
As quickly as the Spartans assumed the momentum they lost it. By the 10:58 mark the Lobos completed a 14-5 run and tied the game at 47-47. New Mexico then put together another run of 12-4 to take a 59-51 lead inside seven minutes to play.
In two minutes time, Woodberry drained a three and Cunnigan flat out whipped the defense for a pair of layups and an eight-point lead was down to one, 59-58 with 4:58 to go.
The teams continued to trade buckets until it was 63-62 with 1:04 to play.
Woodberry had 16 points and three steals. Vann, off the bench, picked up six points, three blocks and a career-high four steals. Baker and Chereese Thomas had four assists each and eight and two points, respectively.
Antiesha Brown paced New Mexico with 17 points and nine rebounds. Shumpert finished the game with 16 points.
New Mexico controlled the inside play with a 38-24 advantage in rebounds. They outscored the Spartans 38-28 in the paint including 10-2 on points in the paint.
San Jose State forced 22 turnovers and scored 27 points off those Lobo miscues.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, February 4 when they host Fresno State in the Event Center. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m.
