Davis, Calif.--The San José State women's gymnastics team started the 2015 season with one of the best team scores in the past 10 years. The team scored a 194.050, to finish third at the NorCal Classic hosted by UC Davis. California won the meet with a 195.175
The team score is second-best only to the 194.300 score to start the 2012 season.
The Spartans started the meet on floor with a 48.375. Cami Guyer led the team with a 9.775, followed by Kiley Field, Alyssa Montalban and Kaitlin Won each a 9.675. Erica Matos scored a 9.575, while Mackenzie Douglas rounded out the scoring at 9.025.
The second rotation found the Spartans on vault where the team scored a 48.775, the 10th-highest vault score in school history. It was also the 25th time a Spartan vault team scored a 48.775 or higher in school history. Transfer Maddie Herr led the team with a 9.800 in her first Spartan vault. Guyer received a 9.775, followed by Hannah Gilbert and Rachel Heinl at 9.750. Won scored a 9.700, while Montalban rounded out the team with a 9.650.
After a bye in the third rotation, San José State moved to bars and scored a 48.525. Heinl and Guyer each scored a 9.750 to lead the team. Herr scored a 9.725, Douglas a 9.675, Marissa Unpingco a 9.625 and Won at 9.550.
San José State competed on beam for the final rotation and ended with a 48.375. Unpingco led the Spartans with a 9.775, followed by Herr at 9.725. Field scored a 9.650, Guyer a 9.625, Won at 9.600 and Gabrielle Kambur at 9.500.
Guyer finished third in the all-around at 38.925, while Won was seventh at 38.525.
San José State opens the home portion of the 2015 season this Friday, January 9, against Stanford. The meet begins at 7 p.m., inside The Event Center, located on the corner of Seventh and San Carlos Streets. Tickets are available at the door. Parking is available for $5 at the South Garage, located on the corner of Seventh and San Salvador Streets.
