Spartans Heading To Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championships

Feb. 15, 2015

After a successful dual- meet season, the San José State University women's swimming and diving team begins the championship portion of its schedule with the 2015 Mountain West Conference Championships.

This year's four-day, 21-event championship meet begins Wednesday, February 18, and concludes Saturday, February 21, at the Palo Alto College Aquatic Center. Ten of the conference's eleven members are vying for individual and team honors.

In 2014-15, the Spartans posted a 10-1 dual meet record, won the Bulldog Invitational at the start of the season and finished fifth among 13 teams at November 2014 A3 Performance Invitational.

Junior Riley Spitser and freshmen Morgan McCormick, Colleen Humel and Cari Reiswig have some of the top conference marks in their respective events. Spitser, the school record holder in the four freestyle races from 200 through 1,650 yards, has the #2-ranked times in the 500 (4:46.10), 1,000 (9:59.68) and 1,650 (16:34.72) freestyles.

Reiswig already is the school record holder in the 1 and 3-meter diving events. Her season-best scores rank are second in the 3-meter and third in the 1-meter among Mountain West divers. She and teammate Marissa O'Quinn are qualifiers for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in March.

McCormick is listed among the conference's top-10 in the 200 back (1:59.79, second), 100 back (55.69, ninth) and 200 individual medley (2:02.92, seventh). Humel's best 200 back (2:00.25) ranks seventh.

In their first Mountain West Championship a year ago, the Spartans finished eighth out of 10. Recently, the conference's 10 coaches listed their predicted order of finish and had San Jose State again in the eighth spot. Defending champion Boise State is the coaches' choice to take the team championship.
